Architecturally The Claremont takes its cue from stately old homes that grace the streets of Broadway Terrace, and is a tribute to the revival Tudor style popular in the Oakland hills in the 1920s and 1930s. This revival style adapted elements of the architectural detailing seen in old European manors born more from the imagination of local craftsman than a specifc code of design.
The homes exterior façade is decorated with broad board and batten paneling and painted window frames. Custom handwrought metal balusters along the exterior stairways mimic the lines of its divided light windows. Inside, fleur-de-lys patterns are carved into wooden balusters and double French knot floors add elegance to the formal rooms.
Although the detailing may be old world, the home offers contemporary features for todays lifestyle, such as an open floor plan for the main living space and kitchen and large folding patio doors that open to a broad private outdoor patio. The architect and designer intentionally built many uniue surprises into the design to make this house like no other.
